Hurricanes Impacting Service from Caribbean to Canada
With Fiona behind us and Ian fast approaching, the current and expected impacts on postal services are being felt from Cayman Islands all the way up to Canada.
Canada Post updated its service alert page to indicate the service impacts from Hurricane Fiona that tore through the Atlantic provinces, battering Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Canada Post reports red alerts (suspended delivery) in a number of those areas where the devastation is particularly acute. See PDF of the alerts page.
Cayman Islands suspended all post offices and their operations (receipt, processing and dispatch of mail) from Friday, 23 September 2022, it said in a circular to the UPU. Hurricane Hermine swept through the Caymans late last week. And early this morning, Hurricane Ian hit western Cuba and is now barreling toward Florida's west coast where storm surge and heavy rain and flooding are expected on Wednesday. Ian will then move inland up the East Coast as heavy rain and wind.
Puerto Rico continues to struggle to restore electricity to the island more than a week after Hurricane Fiona hit. Only a few post offices in Puerto Rico have resumed service as of yesterday. See USPS service alerts page.
